      <image:title>Stories - Making a Home</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the few constants in my life has been visiting my Grandma Callie at her home on Groce Meadow Rd. nestled quietly in the woods and farm fields of the piedmont region of the northwest corner of South Carolina. She almost reached a century on this earth, seeing more change than most of us will ever know. She was both stability and change all at once. This piece is an attempt to grappled with the idea of home in a world defined by change and the march of time. This story is still in development. Photos by Thomas Hammon</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - Chaos Brain</image:title>
<image:caption>Before I knew or understood anything about neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD and Autism, I just described myself as chaotic. Last year, an acquaintance asked me if I had ever been screened for ADHD and she sent me a test. Chaos Brain is my attempt to make photos that feel more authentic to how I see and experience the world, a world that for me has always been overstimulating, vibrantly colored, chaotic, hyperfocused, multi-focused, out of focus, and contradictory. My world is a spectrum, not a binary. *Shoegaze Equinox* This image isn’t the first I made using the double exposure technique, but for me this is the one that solidified the idea in my head. The pretty spring flowers signify growth and new potential but are also evolved to distract and delight the eye and nose. The “shoegaze” is what you do when you are feeling down or looking inward or stuck on the past. The juxtaposition of the two can be overwhelming and chaotic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stories - Carolina Snappy Syncs</image:title>
<image:caption>For approximately two weeks on the waning edge of spring, “Snappy Sync” lightning bugs (Photuris frontalis) synchronize their bioluminescent mating signals like a silent rave across the floodplains of the Congaree River watershed in central South Carolina. These frisky flying beetles begin to emerge from the leaf litter looking for mates around dusk. Within the hour they are moving in and out of phase, initially in small groups, but under the right conditions they pulse together across large sections of forest before rising high into the tree canopy. By about 10 p.m., the congregation begins to disperse. Lead photo Congaree National Park 05.29.15 Photos by Thomas Hammond</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - The Valley, The Mountain, and The Sea</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2013, I found myself in the middle of the Syrian catastrophe, a naive young photojournalist trying to find his way and tell the story of a crisis to crisis-weary people back home. On a whim, I made my way to the ancestral village of my great-grandfather tucked away in a quiet corner of the mountains outside of Beirut. That fateful decision opened up a whole new world of family, identity, and human geography that I have been grappling with ever since. These photographs are the beginning of an attempt to tell the story of family from the Levant to the American South. This is a project that is still very much in its infancy. Above photo: Joseph BouSamra joyfully dances in the town square of Hammana, a largely Maronite Christian town along the Beirut-Damascus highway. During the war, the town was besieged and occupied by the Syrian Army and their local allies. The Italian anti-fascist anthem “Bella Ciao” is a popular request that seems to bring most of the town to their feet in revelry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Commercial - Breathing New Life Into Claussen's Bakery</image:title>
<image:caption>Located between Columbia’s Five Points entertainment district and the heart of the University of South Carolina campus is a peculiar two-story, trapezoidal building known simply as Claussen’s Bakery. Originally built in 1928 by George Frederick Claussen, the grandson of German immigrants, it served the needs of Columbia’s starch enthusiasts until it ceased operations in 1963. Its location, shape, and much of the building’s interior architecture prioritize form over function, presenting a number of interesting challenges and opportunities to subsequent developers. After its tenure as a bakery, the building was converted into a boutique hotel. Claussen’s latest revival is in the form of trendy studio and loft apartment spaces developed by The Styx Co. for upwardly mobile young professionals seeking balance between work and play. <image:title>Commercial - The Lady Returns</image:title>
<image:caption>Just around the corner from Columbia, SC’s iconic Classical Revival style state house at the corner of Lady Street and Sumter Street is a trio of buildings now known as “The Lady.” The oldest and most prominent is a 1920s brick tower known originally as the Masonic Temple Building. By the 1950s, the demand for downtown office space incentivized the construction of a L-shaped Mid-Century Modern annex by the Palmetto State Life Insurance Company. The annex was intentionally designed according to contemporary trends as a contrast to the original building. The third building, a glass and concrete structure nestled on the south side of the original masonic temple, was added by the Merrill Lynch company in the 1980s. This project is still in progress.
